We need to stop hate crime in Cumbria, so that everyone can live and enjoy their lives free from the fear of crime, being harassed bullied or abused. Hate crimes /incidents are where a person is targeted because of hostility or prejudice towards their disability, race or ethnicity, religion or belief, sexual orientation or transgender status.
Anyone can be a victim of a hate crime or incident. If you think that an event – however minor – shows hatred towards disability, race, religion, sexual orientation or gender identity, you should report it & you can report in the same manner as any other incident.
Examples of Hate Crime
Physical attacks, Spitting, Verbal Abuse, Damage to Property, Offensive Letters, Leaflets, Emails and Texts, Bullying and Threats, Abusive gestures Some incidents are crimes and will be prosecuted. The classification will in no way minimise the seriousness with which we will deal with your complaint.
Why Should Hate Crimes be Reported
Why suffer in silence – let us know. Many persons reporting such incidents to us for the first time will have already suffered several similar incidents before contacting us. The victims of such incidents will invariably be subject to further victimisation which if left unchecked can easily escalate and become more serious. People have the right to live free from harassment.
