Thomas Kirkpatrick

A Carlisle man has been jailed for a robbery where he stole money from an elderly woman in her own home.

Thomas William Kirkpatrick, aged 28, of Shadygrove Road, was sentenced today (5th December) at Carlisle Crown Court.

The robbery occurred on 3rd November 2016 at approximately 2pm when Kirkpatrick approached a property on Ashness Drive and knocked on the door. The occupant, a woman in her seventies, opened the door slightly due to an attached security chain and he immediately demanded money. When she told him he had no money the door was kicked causing the chain to snap.

Once inside he threatened the woman and emptied her handbag. Further demands for money were made before he made off from the address with £135.

He pleaded guilty to robbery.

Detective Constable David Hetherington, North Cumbria CID, said:

“This was a clearly a very distressing ordeal for the victim where a man, almost 50 years younger than her, has threatened her for money.

“He caused the victim a significant amount of fear and distress within her own home. He is clearly very dangerous given the lengths that he will go to in order to acquire money.

“He very much deserves his prison sentence.

“I’d like to thank the victim for her cooperation and bravery throughout the investigation. I hope that this can bring some form of closure.

“I’d also like to thank the local members of the community that assisted us with our enquiries.”
